Aging is an ineludible part of our lives as long as we continue to grow and live. While aging has its own perks, it comes with lots of downsides, especially on our health. Our organs begin to deteriorate and would need some form of extrinsic support.
Even though, by our lifestyles and choices, we can beat the effects of aging to an extent, ultimately we cannot deceive nature.
The skin, the most outwardly visible part of the body bears the most consequence of aging. Most, if not all other organs are internally placed and the extents of deterioration cannot be seen with the eyes.
For example, we cannot see how bad a person’s heart is damaged when we look at them. Deterioration of the skin on the other hand is openly visible and cannot be hidden especially on the face.
Effects of aging on the face include loss of muscle tone and skin thinning which gives the face a flabby or drooping appearance. Meaning, the skin also dries out and loses the underlying layer of fat which acts as an adhesive and holds the skin firmly together hence with its loss thereof, the face no longer has a plump, tight and smooth surface.
What is Juvéderm Voluma XC?
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is for deep injection in the cheek area to gently lift the skin and restore volume by correcting age-related volume loss. The procedure is performed on adults of over 21 to improve the chin, nose and facial profile.
It is made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid which is a natural complex sugar that occurs within our bodies. Juvéderm Voluma is the first and only FDA-approved non-surgical option to instantly correct age-related volume loss in the cheek area and has been used in Europe since 2005. It is approved in over 60 countries.
How it works
The falling or sagging of the facial skin may be attributed to sun exposure, free radicals, medications, internal breakdown of collagen or fat, gravity. As you age, the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen decreases resulting in the appearance of sagging and wrinkling of the facial skin.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, which is part of the Juvéderm family, is designed to temporarily add volume for a smoother and rounder appearance to the face by increasing the size of the cheeks. The lidocaine in the gel improves the comfort of the injection by reducing sensitivity to pain.
Hyaluronic acid, or HA, the main component of the injectable is a naturally occurring substance that delivers volume to the skin. It stimulates the production of the connective tissue (collagen) that holds the skin together. Collagen takes in moisture and expands to fill out areas with sagging and volume loss.
Uses, dosage and side effects.
The Juvéderm brand consists of a collection of about 5 derma fillers with specific uses.
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is injected in the cheek area to correct age-related volume loss and for augmentation of the chin region to improve the chin profile in adults over 21.
JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC and JUVÉDERM® XC injectable gels are injected into the facial tissue for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.
JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC injectable gel is for adults over 21.
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC injectable gel is injected into the lips for lip augmentation and correction of perioral lines in adults over 21.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injectable gel is injected into the lips and perioral area for lip augmentation in adults over 21.
Due to its peculiarly thick nature among all the Juvéderm family, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is specifically formulated for injection into the cheek area. This product was previously approved for injection into facial tissue to temporarily restore volume and fullness to the areas of the mid-face, which includes the cheeks and nearby regions confined to the middle portion of the face. This approval expands the use of this product to include the chin region.
It consists of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) produced by Streptococcus equi bacteria, formulated to a concentration of 20 mg/mL and 0.3% w/w lidocaine in a physiologic buffer.
Risks and side effects
Many people experience swelling and bruising after the procedure has been done. Other common side effects which usually subside within 2 to 4 weeks include:
- lumps or bumps
- minor pain
More serious side effects are typically associated with unprofessional handlings, like injecting Juvéderm into a blood vessel unintentionally. Complications can include permanent scarring, vision abnormalities, blindness, or stroke. Because of this, it’s very important to choose your provider with all due diligence. Make sure that they are trained, certified, and licensed to perform the procedure.
Like all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.
In general, patients who have looser, thin skin; enlarged (keloid-type) scars; or women who are pregnant or lactating are not the best candidates for JUVÉDERM®. Also, patients who are under 21 are not advised to get this procedure.
The cost varies depending on the number of syringes used and the specific formula used. The price of a Juvéderm Voluma injection ranges anywhere from $600 – $1,000 per syringe. Other factors that affect the cost include the location and the facility.
Before, during and after the procedure
Due to the risk of possible bruising, it is advised to stay away from anything that thins out the blood. It is best to stop the use of any medications that thin your blood for one week before treatment. Such medication includes aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications and blood thinners like garlic or fish oil. Be sure to take recommendations from your doctor on what type of medication to take before the treatment.
During the treatment
During the procedure, your provider typically uses a pen to mark the areas to be treated and then injects Juvéderm into the target area. Afterwards, they will lightly massage the area to ensure even distribution and reduce the chance of swelling. The entire procedure usually takes between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.
Juvéderm injections contain a small amount of pain-reducing lidocaine. Because of the lidocaine in Juvéderm injections there is very little pain or discomfort felt during treatment.
Recovery time is usually minimal. People are, however, advised to avoid vigorous activities, sun exposure, wearing makeup, and consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
Most notice the effects of Juvéderm right away, or after the swelling reduces. Results typically last between six months to two years depending on the amount or variant of the product used and the client’s metabolism.
